A Significantly Higher Risk
• Chronic infection with the liver fluke Clonorchis sinensis, which is prevalent in parts of Southeast Asia. People
may become infected with this parasite by eating raw or pickled freshwater fish from this region. Most people
with this infection do not develop cancer, however.
• People with chronic ulcerative colitis have a higher incidence of both benign inflammatory processes of the bile
ducts (sclerosing cholangitis) and bile duct cancer.
• People with congenital abnormalities of the bile ducts (choledochal cysts) are more likely to develop
bile duct cancer.
